The apostle wrote, “Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith…to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:24-26). In this beautiful statement concerning the grace of God, Paul states that, through Jesus Christ, God accomplished being both “just and the justifier.” Let us consider these two wonderful attributes of God that we might more fully appreciate His greatness. For thousands of years, the Lord’s people have sung songs of praise to Him (cf. Ex. 15:1; Num. 21:17; 2 Chron. 29:30). Even today, the singing of spiritual songs is an integral part of the worship we offer unto God. Why the importance of singing in our worship to God? Continue Reading »

In the book of 1 Samuel, the prophet Samuel was distraught that the Israelites wanted a king to rule over them. As he expressed this concern to God in prayer, God replied: “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them” (1 Sam. 8:7). Although God was their King and would reign over them, they wanted someone else to take His place. God, seeing their desire to be under another king, said that the people had rejected Him. People today can, and oftentimes do reject the Lord as ruler in their life to serve another. Consider how many reject God for… Continue Reading »

Our worship unto the Lord must be offered according to the truth found in God’s word (Jn. 4:24; 17:17; Col. 3:17). Today, many claim that the use of mechanical instruments of music in worship is accepted by the Lord. Below, I have listed every Scripture in the New Testament that authorizes the use of mechanical instruments of music (i.e. organs, pianos, guitars, etc.) in our worship unto the Lord. The Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. IL, organized under the United Church of Christ denomination, has been in the news of late. This was due to remarks of its former preacher, Jeremiah Wright, and the fact that President Barack Obama was a member of this church. There is also a congregation of the United Church of Christ here in Cookeville. Unfortunately, some will hear “United Church of Christ” and think that it is equivalent to the church of Christ of which we are members. Lest this be thought by any reading this article, and to help us in teaching others, we note the reasons why the United Church of Christ denomination is not the church of Christ that you read of in the Bible. We sometimes sing the song “Looking to Thee” which encourages us to constantly look unto Jesus. The thought for this song is taken from Hebrews 12:2, where the apostle implored that we would be “looking unto Jesus” as an example of suffering with patience. There are several things for which one must look unto Jesus. Notice that we look unto Jesus as… Continue Reading »
Everyone searches for peace. Men seek for peace with themselves, with God, and with others. The reason why so many individuals are unable to find peace is because they search where it cannot be found — in the things of this world. Jesus stated, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33). Until one looks past the things of this world (where there is tribulation) to the things of God, they will never find nor enjoy true peace. The Lord will give peace to those who… Continue Reading »
